在英语中，市中心商业区叫做downtown，去远离市中心的居住区叫做 uptown, 到底为何如此称呼，原来在19世纪三十年代，纽约城快速扩张，建立居民区只能向上建在周围的高地island of Manhattan.去那里是上坡，故此叫uptown，而去商业区是下坡，故此去繁华的商业区是downtown.这两个词集可以做副词，又可以做名词。
