Jeep是一种车型的统称，同时也是一个品牌。第二次世界大战爆发，美国的Willys-Overland
汽车公司
所提交Willys MA原型车被美国军方选中，随后Willys针对军方提出意见对车辆进行改进。1940重新设计的Willys MB吉普车亮相，这款车确立了吉普车的标准。
Jeep在二战战场充当着诸如
侦察车、通勤车、运输车等
角色，它广泛应用于战场的各个角落。在第二次世界大战期间，约有60万辆此型号的Jeep及Jeep改装车型加入作战行列。经过二战的洗礼，证明了Jeep这款车的优异性能，同时也使得Jeep迅速被人们认可和接受。
1945年第一款民用Jeep车CJ-2A（见下图）问世，这款车外形依旧粗犷，但是相比军用越野车拥有更好的行驶舒适性。1948年，Willys-Overland推出了搭载6缸发动机的车型，这款车就是Jeep Cherokee（切诺基）的前身。
1950年，Jeep商标正式注册，Willys-Overland公司正式推出Jeep品牌车型。1953年，美国Kaiser公司收购了Willy-Overland公司，将其改名为Willys Motors并继续生产Jeep系列车型。
由此来看，吉普与jeep其实是两个意思，而两者又有着些许的关联。
