和北半球的大多数国家一样，中国每年夏季会经历“汛期”，也就是河水的水位显著上涨的几个月份。“汛期”在英语称为High water season，也称为Flood season，也就是“经常发生水灾的季节”。
提到“水灾、洪水、发大水”，很多人首先想到的英语说法会是Flood这个词语；但除此以外，英语中还有Deluge和Inundate两个词语，也经常用来描述这种自然灾难。
虽然含义大致相同，Flood、Inundate、Deluge在用法上却有着明显的差异。在指“洪水”时，Flood是最为直白的说法，Inundate更多用作术语，而Deluge则带有浓厚的历史文化意蕴、大多用于夸张。
Flood
Flood是最常用的表示“洪水”的词语，在字典中的主要定义是：
a large amount of water covering an area that is usually dry 由于下大雨或河水溢出堤坝等情况所导致的水灾。
Flood还经常用作比喻用法，描述同时出现的大量的事物或人员，强调数量的众多，例如：
A flood of refugees 大量的难民 The child was in floods of tears. 孩子泪流满面、不停地大哭。
在英语国家，Flood也是经常发生的自然灾难，因此日常语言中有很多相关说法，例如：Flood barrier、Floodgate、Flood plain等等。
关于 Flood，英语中还有一个专业术语Flash flood，中文大多称为“暴雨洪水”或“雨洪”。和中文的“暴雨洪水”相比，Flash flood在英语文化中似乎更加广为人知。
Flash flood的字面含义，是指“像闪电一样的洪水”，指突然发生、持续时间较短的局部地区洪水，一般都是由大雨暴雨导致。
除了城市地区，Flash flood更多出现于人口较少的乡村和荒野。美国中西部各地的一些峡谷，就经常出现Flash flood，转眼之间就会把不幸经过的人员、牲畜、车辆冲走。
Inundate
英语中还有一个本身就是动词的描述“洪水”的词语Inundate 【ɪnən.deɪt】，用法和作动词的Flood相近，但首要含义是用作比喻。Inundate描述发洪水反而是次要含义，大多作为专业术语使用，例如：
We have been inundated with offers of help. 很多人主动提出帮忙我们。 Flood waters inundate the river plain each spring. 春季时冲积平原被洪水淹没。
Inundate这个词语来源于拉丁语，其中und本来的含义是“Wave 水波”。英语中有一个很优美的词语Undulate，就是与Inundate相关，也是动词，用来描述事物的形状和运动方式像波浪一样柔和地起伏。
丰收时节的麦浪、肢体的起伏动作、建筑材料中的石棉瓦，都可以用 Undulating来描述。
The Deluge
和Flood一样，Deluge 【deljudʒ】 本身是名词，同时作为动词使用。在含义上，Deluge和Flood及Inundate也基本相同，既指“洪水”，也用来比喻“数量多”。
We have been deluged with applications for the job. 我们收到大量求职简历。 When the snow melts, the mountain stream becomes a deluge. 每当积雪消融，山中的溪水就变成洪流。
Deluge也是源于拉丁语，含义是“Wash away冲走”，是经过中世纪时的法语而进入英语的。
在英语中，The Deluge过去曾经主要用来指圣经中诺亚方舟传说中的大洪水，所以文化含义更加浓厚。今天的英语中，用Deluge来描述河流或洪水时，大多带有明显的夸张口吻。
英语中有一个和Deluge相关的形容词Antediluvian 【.æntidɪluviən】，也经常用于夸张，形容“非常老、时代极其久远，已经无法适用于今天的世界”。
Antediluvian的这种含义，就是源于圣经中描述的The Deluge，字面意思是Before the Flood，也就是时间年代比圣经中描述的大洪水还要早。
